Ruben Amorim rules out January signings at Man United
United have been linked with the Antonie Semenyo saga, with reports suggesting the club are interested in the 25-year-old Bournemouth forward. However, with Manchester City currently leading the race, United have remained quiet on winter transfer activity.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim said: “We have conversations all the time, it’s not because we are in January. The window is open and we need to understand what we can do, not just in terms of who we can bring in, but what is going to happen with our squad.
“I’m just thinking about recovering all of my players, so I’m not going to knock on the door of Jason [Wilcox] and Omar [Berrada] to ask for more players.”
United are currently struggling with squad availability, with Bruno Fernandes injured, Mazraoui, Amad and Mbeumo away at AFCON, and several other players sidelined. Financial considerations also appear to support Amorim’s stance, with the club expected to face spending limitations and prioritise major reinforcements in the summer rather than taking risks in January.
“They know what we need, but I also understand that we have a process,” Amorim added. “We want to do things with certainty so that we don’t make the same mistakes as in the past. If we need to suffer at some moments, we will suffer, to try to be two steps ahead, maybe in the summer. January is a really tough market.”
Sky Sports also reported that United are planning to sign a defensive midfielder to replace Casemiro, whose contract expires in the summer. The club previously explored a move for Carlos Baleba but were put off by the valuation. Other midfield targets being monitored include Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Angelo Stiller. A centre-back is also on the agenda, with Harry Maguire’s contract set to expire next summer.
Manchester United will face Wolves at 3:15 AM (GMT+7) in their final match of 2025, before travelling to Leeds on 4 January and hosting Burnley on 8 January.
