Rasmus Hojlund risks his Man United future with Instagram post after Super Cup
Napoli defeated Bologna 2-0 last night to lift the Italian Super Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Both goals were scored by David Neres, securing Napoli’s third Super Cup title after triumphs in 1990 and 2014. It marked Napoli’s second trophy of 2025, following their Serie A title win last season under Antonio Conte.
For Rasmus Hojlund, the success was even more meaningful as it was his first trophy with Napoli since joining the club in the summer of 2025. To celebrate, the Danish forward posted on Instagram: “What a great decision looks like.” The image showed Hojlund smiling while holding the trophy, a caption widely interpreted as a clear endorsement of his move to the reigning Italian champions.
The post was seen by many as a direct message to Manchester United, effectively shutting down the possibility of a return to Old Trafford. Hojlund is currently at Napoli on loan from United, in a deal worth €6 million, with a €44 million buy-out clause that becomes active if Napoli qualify for the Champions League. Given the current situation, there is a strong chance Napoli will trigger the option.
After the match, Napoli manager Antonio Conte also made a notable remark: “Now everyone keeps talking about Højlund and McTominay… remember they were not playing at Manchester United. Ask yourselves some questions. Me and my staff must have done something right. There has to be a reason.”
Hojlund struggled to establish himself at United after joining in 2023. Over two seasons, he made 95 appearances but scored only 26 goals. In contrast, his time in Italy has been far more productive, with seven goals and three assists in 19 matches for Napoli. With Benjamin Šeško now leading the line at United, Hojlund’s chances of returning to the club appear slim.
Napoli currently sit third in Serie A, one point behind second-placed AC Milan and two points off leaders Inter Milan. After returning from Saudi Arabia with the Super Cup trophy, Napoli will face Cremonese on 28 December in their final match of 2025, before taking on Lazio on 4 January.
