Oscar forced to retire after heart issue
According to Brazilian media, Oscar was taken to hospital after collapsing on the training ground. At the time, the midfielder was using an exercise bike during an interval test at São Paulo. After being admitted to the ICU, medical staff confirmed that he was suffering from vasovagal syncope, a condition that affects heart rate and blood pressure.
After discussions with the club, Oscar expressed his decision to retire, with an official announcement expected in the coming days. Oscar had only rejoined São Paulo earlier this year on a free transfer, making a total of 21 appearances, scoring 2 goals and providing 5 assists across all competitions. Although the team finished only 8th in the league, his return was still considered a positive step for both the player and the club.
The news has shocked many, especially given that Oscar is just 34 years old. However, there were warning signs earlier in the year, as he suffered a fractured vertebra while playing for São Paulo. Ultimately, the midfielder decided to retire in order to protect his health.
Oscar began his professional career in 2008 after graduating from São Paulo’s academy. After two and a half years, he left for Internacional before moving to Chelsea in 2012. At Chelsea, Oscar became a star with impressive performances, winning the Europa League in the 2012/13 season and two Premier League titles. While many fans expected him to remain in London, Oscar made a surprise move to Shanghai SIPG for €60 million.
During his eight years in China, Oscar helped the club win three Chinese league titles, one Chinese FA Cup and one Chinese Super Cup, while also earning a significant salary. At the beginning of this year, he announced his return to Brazil, rejoining his boyhood club São Paulo, though he was unable to help the team win any trophies.
São Paulo are expected to work with Oscar to officially announce his retirement and terminate his contract. The midfielder will now focus on recovering his health and adjusting to life away from professional football.
