Liverpool retain Andrew Robertson while awaiting AS Roma’s next move
In recent days, reports have emerged that Tottenham are interested in signing Andrew Robertson from Liverpool as they look to strengthen their squad after a disastrous first half of the season. Initially, Liverpool were open to the deal, with their vice-captain having just six months left on his contract.
According to transfer experts, the move was close to completion for a fee of around £5 million, with the 31-year-old left-back also reaching a personal agreement with Spurs. However, BBC Sport has since reported that the deal could collapse, as Liverpool have struggled to find a suitable replacement for the Scotland captain.
In an ideal scenario, Liverpool would recall Kostas Tsimikas, who is currently on loan at AS Roma, to act as cover for Milos Kerkez. However, Roma are not keen on ending the loan early, as they also need depth at left-back. The Greek defender joined Roma in the summer window but has made only four league starts in Serie A this season.
That said, the situation could still change in the coming days. Roma sporting director Ricky Massara confirmed before the AC Milan - Roma match that discussions are ongoing with Liverpool. “There are ongoing discussions with Liverpool, we’ll see in the next few days,” he told DAZN.
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for a fee of just £8 million. Since then, he has developed into one of the best left-backs in the world, known for his attacking output and defensive reliability. In eight and a half years at the club, Robertson has won every major club trophy available, with the possible exception of the Europa League.
Earlier this month, Robertson spoke about his future at Anfield. “We’ll see what happens,” he said. “We’ve had chats now which will remain private. I’ve spoken to them and we’ll see what happens. Would I like to stay? Yes, but it’s a difficult question to ask. I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there are options to go and things like that.
“I’ll sit down with my family and decide. After a stressful summer, I’m just trying to enjoy being a part of it, and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we’ve managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family want moving forward.”
