Liverpool or Bayern return? Six potential clubs for Xabi Alonso post-Madrid departure

After leaving Real Madrid earlier this week, Xabi Alonso may not have to wait long for a new job. By the summer of 2026, the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach is expected to be one of the most sought-after managers in Europe.

Xabi Alonso was sacked by Real Madrid following the 3-2 defeat against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup. The 44-year-old ended his stint at the club after just seven months, amid reports of a deteriorating relationship with parts of the squad. Following his departure, Real Madrid appointed Álvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach.

Despite the abrupt exit, Alonso’s reputation remains high. Several clubs are expected to be in the market for a new manager in the summer of 2026, and the Spaniard is likely to be among the leading candidates.

Liverpool

This appears to be one of the most realistic destinations. Arne Slot’s position has come under pressure after a series of disappointing results in November. However, Liverpool are unlikely to make a managerial change mid-season, meaning Alonso could be considered as a summer option if the situation does not improve.

Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s contract at Manchester City runs until 2027, but Alonso is widely viewed as one of the strongest candidates should City plan for a future beyond Guardiola. Alonso previously played under Pep during their time together at Bayern Munich and has often spoken about the influence Guardiola had on his coaching philosophy.

Manchester United

United are also expected to reassess their managerial situation after sacking Ruben Amorim. Michael Carrick has been appointed until the end of the season, but he may not be viewed as a long-term solution. Alonso’s familiarity with systems such as a 3-4-2-1, which he used at Leverkusen, could suit the current United squad.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham have struggled under Thomas Frank, and his future at the club looks uncertain. Despite having a squad with quality individuals, Spurs’ poor league form - currently sitting 14th after finishing 17th last season - could make the job less attractive for Alonso.

Bayern Munich

A return to Bayern Munich is another possibility. Vincent Kompany’s side are performing strongly, remaining unbeaten in the Bundesliga and suffering only one defeat in the Champions League. Even so, Alonso’s previous experience in the Bundesliga with Leverkusen, combined with his history at Bayern as a player, would make him a natural candidate if a change is made.

Paris Saint-Germain

PSG could also be in the market for a new coach, with Luis Enrique expected to depart at the end of the season. Alonso would be seen as a logical successor, given his tactical profile and experience managing elite players. With a squad that won the treble last season, PSG could offer an ideal platform for his next project.
